Thursday, July 31, 2025, marked the end of KRGVs full-time operations of its Spanish News brand "Noticias RGV." There is no change in KRGV's commitment to Channel 5 News as the Valley's most watched news station.
With the support of the Manship family, KRGV has served Spanish-speaking viewers in the Rio Grande Valley for over ten years.
KRGV General Manager John Kittleman, said "Our goal over this past decade has been to provide our audience with local news they can trust in the language they prefer. I am so proud of every member of our staff, past and present, who contributed to our efforts. I want to thank our advertising partners who believed in our ability to deliver results for their businesses. And I want to thank our viewers. Unfortunately, in the end, the audience wasn't large enough to justify our continued efforts."
Here is a timeline of KRGV's commitment to Spanish-speaking viewers in the Rio Grande Valley:
- July 1, 2015: KRGV launched its SAP services. All Channel 5 newscasts included a live Spanish translation from a team of Spanish speaking professional journalists via the Secondary Audio Program (SAP).
- September 30, 2019: KRGV ended its SAP service and launched "Somos Noticias" on its 5.2 subchannel - which included four one hour live Spanish newscasts daily, from KRGV's Weslaco studios.
- October 1, 2020: KRGV's 5.2 channel entered into a programming affiliation agreement with Azteca America and launched "Hechos Valle" with more local news in Spanish than any station in the Rio Grande Valley. Azteca America ceased operations in the United States on December 31, 2022.
- January 1, 2023: KRGV partnered with Novelisima and rebranded its Spanish newscasts as “Noticias RGV.”
- January 1, 2025: KRGV's Channel 5.2 returned its programming to “Somos el Valle” and continued its commitment to “Noticias RGV” - with more local news in Spanish than any station in the Rio Grande Valley.
