Public meetings in McAllen will discuss proposed Nolana Avenue expansion project

McAllen officials said they want to expand one of their busiest stretches of road to be able to relieve traffic.
Nearly 25,000 drivers use Nolana Avenue daily.
“We project that to go up to 30,000 vehicles in the next five years,” McAllen Engineering Director Eduardo Mendoza said.
To prepare for that growth, the city wants to work with the Texas Department of Transportation to expand Nolana Avenue from Ware Road to 23rd Street.
The plan would widen the road from four lanes to six in that area.
“That six-lane roadway will have a median, a five-foot sidewalk on one side and a 10-foot shared-use path on the other so you can use it like a hike and bike trail,” Mendoza said.
The project is expected to cost nearly $10 million, and the city said they already have about half of that funding secured.
The other half would be covered by taxpayer money and federal funding.
But before any construction begins, city leaders and TxDOT want to hear from the people who use the road every day.
“We want public input, it's part of the environmental process that we go through with TxDOT," Mendoza said.
An in-person meeting to discuss the proposed expansion project is set for Thursday, Dec. 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the McAllen Public Library.
A virtual meeting will also be held on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 5 p.m.
Additional details on the project are available online.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, and it should take about a year to a year and a half to complete.
