Over 200 people showed up during a Saturday protest in McAllen.

The protest was organized by the South Texas Grassroots Coalition, and it was one of many held across the country against President Donald Trump’s administration.

“No kings, no silence, protect the constitution,” were among the chants that could be heard off of Bicentennial Boulevard and Business 83.

Fabiola Escalon was among the organizers for the protest.

“We respect the constitution, and we are here to protect the constitution,” Escalon said. “…our first amendment is sacred and we need to protect it peacefully."

According to Escalon, the group was sharing their thoughts on what they called "Trump's unchecked power, and the collapse of check and balances.”

“The people of the Rio Grande Valley will suffer the most from Trump's policies, especially the slashing of all these social services that our community depends on,” Escalon said. “We are one of the lowest income areas in the United States, we have the highest number of immigrants as well."

Some of those policies include President Trump's executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. The Trump Administration has previously said it believes the department is “wasteful,” and its closure will return authority over a child's education to the states.

Concerns over the possible closure inspired this current UTRGV sociology major Janie Torres to attend the protest.

“I'm really, happy it's opened my eyes,” Torres said. “I didn't know this was a real thing but I am happy to see everyone's different points of views, because it really makes a valid point."

The coalition’s next step is encouraging people to vote and get involved in their communities.

“If you are not registered to vote, check your voter registration so we can make our voice heard at the ballot box,” Escalon said. “If we don't go to the ballot box, then our voices are not heard."

It’s a thought that protestor Tim Watts echoed.

“If you don't speak out, don't complain when your rights have been taken away in the future,” Watts said

The South Texas Grassroots Coalition will continue to have protest and encourage people to voice their opinions.
