Man pleads guilty in fatal Cameron Park shooting

A Cameron County jury will decide the fate of a man who pleaded guilty in connection with a fatal March 2023 shooting in Cameron Park.

Court records show Juan Alvarez pleaded guilty to murder on Monday in connection with the death of Andrew Lee Torres.

Torres was found dead in a vehicle that crashed after he had been shot nine times at Cameron Park, according to previous reports.

Alvarez was arrested shortly afterward. He was 17 years old at the time of the arrest.

Jurors were at the Cameron County courthouse on Tuesday for the punishment phase of Alvarez’s trial to decide his sentencing.  The jurors were sent home Tuesday evening and will be back to resume the punishment phase on Wednesday morning. 

Alvarez faces up to life in prison.
