Remaining Canterbury elementary students finishing school year at city rec center
Nearly 400 Edinburg CISD students are finishing the school year at the city’s recreation center.
On Thursday, Edinburg CISD announced that students in the third through fifth grades from Canterbury Elementary School would be relocated to the Edinburg Recreation Center.
Monday was the first day of the relocation.

The relocation is being done as Canterbury elementary is getting deep cleaned after E. coli was found in several rooms.
Previously, the district relocated about 200 students from grades Pre-K through second to Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School.
District officials said the E. coli levels do not pose a threat to student’s health.

Some parents told Channel 5 News they’re worried about how long their children were at the other campus.
One mom said her daughter suffers from diabetes. When she went back to school after the March 2025 storms that led to a sewage backup at the school, she got sick.
Ivas Soto said he's worried about how the last few weeks of classes are going to go in the new environment.
“They're doing it for safety, so I’m grateful that they're doing it if they feel like it's unsafe or out of an abundance of caution,” Soto said. “At the same time, I'm frustrated because it's affecting my daughter's education."
