Volunteers helping flood victims in Santa Rosa recover
Volunteers dumped out wheelbarrows full of water damaged items Thursday in the town of Santa Rosa.
The water-damaged items were once priceless memories that were lost during last month's flood.
Elizabeth Sustaita's parents have lived on Lajara Avenue in Santa Rosa for over 55 years. The home's inside walls that saw many generations walk by are now gutted.
“There [was] two feet [of water] that went into the homes, so pretty much everything is damaged and having to be thrown away,” Sustaita said. It's very painful to see."
Volunteers from a Christian ministry — Texans on Mission — stopped by the home to help clean out water soaked items.
"Our main focus is to provide help, hope and healing for those that are devastated by some type of disaster,” volunteer Mike Pedigo said.
Pedigo said the ministry has been in the Rio Grande Valley since April 2, cleaning over a dozen homes.
Volunteers have taken out damaged sheetrock to avoid mold growth.
The water has receded out of the majority of the neighborhoods in the Santa Rosa area, and families are able to start the cleanup process and put out all the damaged items on the road just down the street.
But there are still some areas on the outskirts of Santa Rosa with stagnant water three weeks after the heavy rainfall.
“People see this as a very slow process, and it is, but every day the water levels are going down — but they can't go down fast enough." Cameron County Drainage District #6 Director Gilbert Galvan said.
Galvan said four pumps are actively being used at the Tio Cano Pump Station to get water out of the Tio Cano Lake and into the Arroyo Colorado and International Boundary and Water Commission floodway.
Channel 5 News was told the stagnant water along Coco Road, FM 506 and other problems areas will eventually flow southeast into the lake pump station, or naturally evaporate.
Galvan said the drainage district is currently working on 10 drainage improvement projects, one of which will focus on widening the parker drain east of FM 506 to help the flow of water. That project will break ground within nine months.
