City of Mercedes discusses major road improvement project
Potholes and dips are a common sight for Dalia Peña when she drives on 10th Street in Mercedes.
“Many areas have been neglected throughout the years,” Peña said.
In August 2024, Channel 5 News reported that the city approved a one-cent property tax increase, and planned to use revenue from it to fix the road. Channel 5 News reached out to Mercedes Assistant City Manager PR Avila to ask if that was still the plan.
Avila said the city is using about $830,000 in revenue from the property tax increase to help fund a 1.3 mile-long road improvement project on 10th Street.
As part of the project, the city will also replace water pipes from Rico Road to Maryland Avenue.
“Once we do the re-installation, it's going to be a full reconstruction of the road and the sections we are working on,” Avila said.
According to Avila, the project is being split into three phases. Phase one was completed in November.
Money from the property tax revenue will also be used to help pay for the second and third phases of the 10th Street project, along with other infrastructure projects.
There is currently no timeline for the project's final completion date.
