Custodians at Sharyland Pioneer High School now have a new, paved walkway to take out the trash on campus.

It's all thanks to a group of architecture and construction students.

As custodians at Sharyland Pioneer, Mike Ortiz and Manuel said it's always been a struggle to take the trash out on campus since there was no directly paved path to the trash bins.

Some students began to notice.

“We felt bad for ‘em,” student Eduardo Estrada said. “They do work hard, they come to our school and clean it every day.”

Last month, Estrada and other classmates decided to design and build a concrete walkway for the custodians.

Six yards of concrete was donated to the students by 57 Concrete.

The students were guided by their teacher, Jorge Espinoza, who said this is the first time a project like this was done by students on campus.

"I had about 17 kids helping out, it was a very cool experience for them and for me as well,” Espinoza said.

A red ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, April 10, for the walkway that’s now complete and ready to use.

“This has made it so much easier for us, we're super thankful,” Ortiz said.

Saucedo said he is grateful the students noticed their struggle and put in an effort to make a change.

“We can walk better,” Saucedo said. “It took us a while, but this is the first time I see something like this."
