Edinburg officials hoping $6 million parking garage will alleviate parking concerns around new courthouse
Those struggling to find a parking space at the new Hidalgo County Courthouse may have to wait until next year to see some relief.
Edinburg Mayor Pro-Tem Jason De Leon said parking is limited in the area, and the city has been working on a solution for four years.
The solution: a $6 million, three-story parking garage with 250 parking spaces. Construction begins September 2025.
“We need them to be able to feel comfortable to be parking and not have to worry about being towed either,” De Leon said.
In March 2025, the Edinburg city council passed parking restrictions along several streets around the courthouse.
Under the restrictions, visitors in downtown Edinburg would be limited to parking for a maximum of two hours, or have their cars towed.
Channel 5 News reached out to the Edinburg Police Department. A spokesperson said they were unaware of any parking enforcement measures around the courthouse.
“Right now, we're just trying to bring awareness on there,” De Leon said. “We're not trying to do any moves, but we had a lot of businesses come in and have some concerns about the parking issues for their customers."
The parking garage project is being paid for using one of two 2021 bonds from the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation.
Construction for the parking garage will be completed in October 2026.
