A man is in custody after recklessly driving through a cemetery and damaging some graves, according to the Rio Grande City Police Department.

The damage occurred early Monday morning at the La Paz Cemetery, located at 3673 US-83 in Rio Grande City.

Surveillance footage show a van entering the cemetery around 5 a.m. Police said the driver, identified as a 34-year-old man, was driving recklessly when he lost control of the vehicle.

The man was arrested later that same day, his name has not been released by police.

Rio Grande City Interim Police Chief Jose Solis called the incident “disappointing.”

“That's the place you go to pay respects to your loved ones, and for somebody to disregard your hard-earned money — “it's very disappointing,” Solis said.

The driver could face charges of trespassing and reckless damage or destruction to property.
